The Family Planning Council is applying to the Abortion Supervisory Committee for a licence to provide an Early Medical Abortion service. Family Planning not only wants to REFER women for abortion, now it wants to PROVIDE them as well using the drug Mifegyne RU486.

According to its March 11 2009 press release Family Planning wants to play “a key role in advocating for better services for women and where appropriate, to be offering these services [abortion] itself.” Family Planning has 30 clinics across the country and Family Planning President Linda Penno says:

“Currently, New Zealand women have inconsistent access to abortion services and in many areas, limited choice about the method of abortion they can access. Safe and accessible abortion services are an integral part of good reproductive health care. Applying for this licence is consistent with that philosophy of access and choice…”

Family Planning wants more access to abortion because they believe that being able to choose to end the life of an unborn baby is “an integral part of good reproductive health care.”

This petition is to ask that the Abortion Suppervisory Committee DECLINE the application for a medical abortion license for the Hamilton Family Planning Clinic.
